DepEd to boost Sulu public schools | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "JOLO, Sulu, Philippines – Representative Habib Tupay Loong (1st District, Sulu) yesterday said the Department of Education (DepEd) has allotted over P85 million to help improve the quality of education in Sulu aimed at reducing the growing illiteracy rate in his district.

Loong said DepEd Undersectary Rizalino T. Rivera in a communication sent to him recently said the education department has also allocated 48 new teaching positions for teachers to serve in the 1st District of Sulu.

Loong said the gain he achieved is part of the help extended to him by Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan in seeking aid from DepEd for his district.

“Governor Tan is very cooperative and you can always count on him for help in seeking fund to develop Sulu. This is achievable if both political leaders belong to the same party, because both of us are working for the same vision and objective for the development of Sulu,” Loong explained.

Adding that DepEd had also allotted 114,292,000 textbooks for students in an effort to help them improve their reading skills.

Of the P85 million, Loong said P63,299,000 will used to construct 83 units of new school buildings consisting of 93 classrooms, P7,942,000 for school chairs, and P13,906,000 for water and sanitation facilities for the schools under the district."
