The five-member team visited the Schuylkill County area from Monday through Saturday, according to a Rotary press release.
The visiting Exchange team included team leader Edgar Chiongbian, District 3860 Secretary and past president of the Rotary Club of Cebu, Philippines, who is a retired mechanical engineer and businessman. Chiongbian writes a sports column for Sunstar Cebu, a daily newspaper.
Other members of the team included Joan Sarausos-Largo, assistant dean of the College of Law at the University of San Carlos; Josie Marfe Montes, a local government operations officer for the Department of the Interior and Local Government in Calape, Bohol; Sheila Abigail Go, a lawyer specializing in corporate law and taxation; and Merrill May Baje, a pediatric dentist in Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island, Cebu."

Ovarian cancer was very rare in both groups of women -- 1 in 300 women who only had a hysterectomy were diagnosed with the disease, compared to 1 in 5,000 women who had their ovaries removed with the hysterectomy.
The authors calculated that 323 women would have needed to have their ovaries removed to prevent each case of ovarian cancer.
Both groups of women were diagnosed with heart disease and hip fractures at similar rates, and about the same amount of women in both groups died during the study - 8 of every 1,000 women each year."

An investigation conducted by environmental groups Ban Toxics, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, Health Care Without Harm and the EcoWaste Coalition on April 19 yielded 'disturbing levels of mercury vapor in lamp waste recycling stations' of the Pier 18, Garbage Transfer Station.
In a statement, the groups explained that they used a hand-held ambient air analyzer to obtain mercury vapor data from the sites where the breaking of mercury-containing compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is conducted.
The groups tested 14 used CFLs in two separate breaking sites. The average reading for the tested lamps was 117.20 micrograms per cubic meter (mcg/m3), with one product registering mercury vapor of 502.40 mcg/m3.
The permissible exposure limit for mercury vapor, as set by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is 100 mcg/m3, according to the groups."

“They can take it during breakfast or lunch or dinner, whichever suits them best,” the banker who is a self-confessed camote beakfast-eater said.
He pointed out that instead of importing rice, the government should opt for reduction in consumption. “Apart from neutralizing the rice shortage, the government will save a lot of foreign exchange if importation is minimized or not availed of,” he said."

Several paintings of the most prolific Filipino child prodigy in visual arts were recently featured in Shanghai at joint exhibition of artworks by gifted child artists from the Philippines and China.
Nine-year-old Hamzah Marbella's 42 artistic creations were displayed among 400 selected artworks of Chinese child artists.
The youngest member of the Art Association of the Philippines, Marbella has produced some 300 artworks and have been awarded with more than 100 top prizes, honors and citations and accolades since he started painting at age two.
Among them are Outstanding Artist Award (Ani ng Sining) from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) last March 10, 2009 at Malacañang Palace. (Roy C. Mabasa)"

The maiden voyage to the Sandakan port of Malaysia will have a travel time of three days.
“We hope to see more trips, more participation of our local investors in the future,” Mohammad said.
The revival of the ARMM barter trade came when Acting Regional Governor Ansaruddin Adiong assumed the post in December 2009 ordered the rehabilitation of Polloc port, long abandoned due to security problems and alleged high port charges and toll fees."

The distribution of the 20 Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded electric tricycles or e-trikes in Mandaluyong City in Metro Manila, Philippines' capital, on Wednesday came a week after a lawmaker proposed banning the use of plastic bags in major establishments.
In a statement, ADB's Principal Energy Specialist Sohail Hasnie said that every 20,000 e-trikes that are introduced to Manila's streets will save the 100,000 liters of foreign fuel imports each day or about 35 million U.S. dollars annually. ADB said e-trikes are more sustainable and energy-efficient.
'This initiative not only benefits the environment, but it also supports the Philippines drive to become more energy independent,' Hasnie added."

'A serious concern is stable electricity. Some electronic products need constant, regular electricity,' Mr. Shimizu told BusinessWorld.
He also cited Metro Manila’s heavy traffic, which makes transporting goods from areas south of the metropolis to the north difficult.
'If these are improved, Japanese companies may consider investing in the Philippines,' Mr. Shimizu said.
A representative of the local Japanese business chamber, meanwhile, said the country offered some advantages. An investments official also said the Philippines was ready to welcome additional Japanese investments."

The students at Makiling are now carefully chosen from thousands of applicants who audition for just over 30 slots a year."

This came as two consular teams from the Philippine Embassy in Japan journeyed to Fukushima prefecture yesterday to bring relief goods to Filipinos there who have been displaced by the nuclear emergency resulting from the 9-magnitude earthquake and monster tsunami that struck Japan on March 11.

The PDI launched the relief drive on April 4 in partnership with Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) and Peace Boat, a Japan-based international organization that works to promote peace, human rights and sustainable development.
The Peace Boat, a cruise ship with a capacity of 2,000 passengers, will dock on April 13 in Manila, its last port of call before leaving for Japan. It will carry relief goods for distribution in Japan."
This came as two consular teams from the Philippine Embassy in Japan journeyed to Fukushima prefecture yesterday to bring relief goods to Filipinos there who have been displaced by the nuclear emergency resulting from the 9-magnitude earthquake and monster tsunami that struck Japan on March 11.
The consular missions visited four locations in Fukushima and distributed food packs, rice, canned goods, bottled water, blankets and other relief items.
