PSC, Brunei to sign sports pact | The Manila Bulletin Newspaper Online: "Philippine Sports Commission officials led by chairman Ricardo Garcia offered to introduce arnis, the traditional Filipino martial arts, while Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah said they can help improve Filipino skills in pencak silat, sepak takraw and traditional boat race.
“We see the potential of Brunei learning more about martial arts like arnis,” said Haji Abdullah.
Aside from arnis, the Philippines will also try to assist Brunei in developing basketball, softball and athletics – sports that Filipinos are seen to have some expertise.
But the Philippines appears to gain more from the exchange as the country has had difficulty landing medals in pencak silat, sepak takraw and the traditional boat race in the Southeast Asian Games where arnis is not part of the events.
Garcia said the details of the Memorandum of Agreement are now being finalized but no date has yet been set for its signing."
