Wellness in Education: DepEd to start 'K+12' in June | The Philippine Star >> News >> Headlines

DepEd to start 'K+12' in June | The Philippine Star >> News >> Headlines: "MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to implement the first phase of its ambitious K+12 (kindergarten plus 12 years) proposal with the establishment of thousands of “kindergarten schools” in most of the 38,000 public elementary schools throughout the country by the opening of school year 2011-2012 this June.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said yesterday the kindergarten schools would also be bolstered by thousands of pre-schools to be created from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) barangay day care centers in collaboration with the Department of Health.

Luistro said the DepEd was given much encouragement to push ahead with their grand plan to add two years to the basic education curriculum (BEC).

The current BEC has 10 years of elementary and secondary education, but the DepEd now wants to have six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school and an additional two years of senior high school."

Wellness in Arts: BusinessWorld Online Edition |The next big star

BusinessWorld Online Edition |The next big star: "The first portfolio review held at Silverlens in 2009 attracted the likes of Tatong Recheta Torres, Leeroy New (who was told to clean up the technical side of his work), Cos Zicarelli, and Mark Salvatus (who was told to stick to his community approach to art, which he did to great success). “You’ll be surprised at how open they were to feedback,” said Ms. Lorenzo, who organized the sessions because she wanted to meet artists away from the school setting and the drunken-gallery-opening setting.

“The idea of making art is so disconnected from what the real life of an artist is,” she continued. “The art world out of school is different. There is no structure, no input from your peers, and you often have to learn on your own.”

In that sense, the Silverlens portfolio review cum critique fills a vacuum. “I take my hat off to Isa for putting this together. It’s a great preparatory procedure for young artists,” said Ms. Ooi, who was also a “judge” in the first edition. “Frankly, particularly in this day and age, I feel it is much needed as the whole business of being an artist is far trickier and precarious if you don’t know what you are getting yourself into.”"

Environmental groups detect toxic vapors in Tondo - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos

Environmental groups detect toxic vapors in Tondo - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos: "Environmental groups are now urging proper toxic waste disposal after detecting mercury vapors in the port area of Tondo, Manila.

An investigation conducted by environmental groups Ban Toxics, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, Health Care Without Harm and the EcoWaste Coalition on April 19 yielded 'disturbing levels of mercury vapor in lamp waste recycling stations' of the Pier 18, Garbage Transfer Station.

In a statement, the groups explained that they used a hand-held ambient air analyzer to obtain mercury vapor data from the sites where the breaking of mercury-containing compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is conducted.

The groups tested 14 used CFLs in two separate breaking sites. The average reading for the tested lamps was 117.20 micrograms per cubic meter (mcg/m3), with one product registering mercury vapor of 502.40 mcg/m3.

The permissible exposure limit for mercury vapor, as set by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is 100 mcg/m3, according to the groups."

To save on rice: Eat camote for breakfast | The Philippine Star >> Business Features >> Agriculture

To save on rice: Eat camote for breakfast | The Philippine Star >> Business Features >> Agriculture: "As a solution to the “perennial” rice shortage the country is facing, a rural banker is promoting the serving of camote, instead of rice, on breakfast tables.

Roberto Alingog, president of PR Bank based in Cauayan, Isabela, who this writer met in Saigon, Vietnam recently, said that reduction in rice consumption would be tremendous if Filipinos eat camote once a day.

“They can take it during breakfast or lunch or dinner, whichever suits them best,” the banker who is a self-confessed camote beakfast-eater said.

He pointed out that instead of importing rice, the government should opt for reduction in consumption. “Apart from neutralizing the rice shortage, the government will save a lot of foreign exchange if importation is minimized or not availed of,” he said."

Monroe commissioners pay golden tribute to Peace Corps volunteers | PoconoRecord.com: "'I wish I could make a proclamation that all teachers had to go into the Peace Corps and then come back,' said Letitia Lladoc, a retired teacher who served in the Philippines from 1964-66.

During her two-year tour, Lladoc taught English to public school students. While there she met her future husband, Jesse Lladoc, a local politician who became deputy governor of Leyte province. She stayed in the country for 15 years before returning to Monroe County with her husband."

....beyond my eyes can see....

Wellness Series: ...beyond my eyes can see....

"Beyond my eyes can see....
there must be something more...
beneath the surface rush of things...
there's something else in store....

Beyond this daily life...
there must be more to life...
an underlying rhyme in things...
I must have known before...

Before the seasons change...
before I grew too wise
I asked each passing clouds and search meaning in the skies

I read between the lines but the verses lost their rhymes
And though the truth has long been told...
I'm still waiting for a sign

Where are you?
You whom I seek to know
Are you the one I'm looking for?
Show your face, why don't you break your silence now?
Tame the stormy seas within me
Name the shadows trapped inside
Claim this lost and frightened child
You see in me..... ....
